The device's specifications are guaranteed from -10 C to 60 C ambient, and its accuracy is virtually unaffected by environmental temperature, thanks to special precision resistors and a highly stable reference voltage source.

The 1523 Reference Thermometer is robust, enduring rigorous testing in temperature extremes and under harsh conditions of vibration, making it a reliable tool that can be used anywhere. It features INFO-CON connectors that house a memory chip storing calibration information for the attached probe. This design ensures accurate, hassle-free measurements by uploading the probe's information to the readout upon connection, thereby ensuring correct temperature conversion.

For security and system calibration traceability, probes can be password-locked to specific channels and readouts. The device also supports the use of any thermocouple with mini-thermocouple jacks via an optional universal thermocouple adapter for convenient measurement. Each thermocouple adapter or standard connector supports reference junction compensation (RJC) with its own internal precision thermistor.

The 1523 thermometer’s 128x64-backlit LCD display allows users to monitor trends graphically, either in the lab or in the field. The graph’s resolution can be adjusted at the touch of a button, making it easy to see when the temperature is stable without the need for statistics or long delays. It also enables the monitoring of processes over time to verify correct operation.

The device can document on demand up to 25 readings and associated statistics for easy retrieval. The data can be viewed through the display or uploaded to a PC via an RS-232 connection and the included 9940 software. For those who prefer USB connectors, RS-232-to-USB adapters are available. The device's battery power lasts at least 20 hours on three AA batteries, but a DC power adapter can be used for extended periods of measurement.
