Why Choose The Arty Z7-20?

The only difference between the Arty Z7-10 and Arty Z7-20 are the capabilities of the Zynq part and the amount of I/O available on the shield connector. The Zynq processors both have the same capabilities, but the -20 has about a 3 times larger internal FPGA than the -10. The differences between the two variants are summarized below:

Arty Z7 Series Overview

The Arty series of FPGA/SoC boards (All Programmable System-on-Chip) from Digilent were crafted with adaptability and versatility as their core principles. Equipped with widely used Arduino headers and several Pmod ports, an Arty board stands as the most flexible FPGA/SoC board in your collection.

The Arty Z7 serves as a ready-for-action development platform, built around the Zynq-7000 All Programmable System-on-Chip (AP SoC) from Xilinx. The architecture of the Zynq-7000 tightly couples a dual-core, 650 MHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor with the Xilinx 7-series Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) logic. This combination allows for the creation of a powerful processor surrounded by a unique set of software-defined peripherals and controllers, customized by you to suit the specific application.

The Vivado, Petalinux, and SDSoC toolsets each offer a user-friendly route from defining your custom peripheral set to implementing its functionality on a Linux OS or bare metal program running on the processor. For those who prefer a more conventional digital logic design experience, it's also feasible to bypass the ARM processors and program the Zynq's FPGA as you would any other Xilinx FPGA. Digilent offers a variety of materials and resources for the Arty Z7 to help you get started quickly with your preferred tool of choice.

Xilinx's Vivado Design Suite Software

To create and modify designs for your Arty Z7, you can use Xilinx's Vivado Design Suite. Vivado is a software designed for the synthesis and analysis of HDL designs.

The Xilinx SDSoC Development environment provides a familiar embedded C/C++/OpenCL application development experience for heterogeneous Zynq SoC deployment. A voucher for the SDSoC Development Environment is available for purchase with the Arty Z7-20. This voucher does not include access to the Vivado Design Suite, but both variants of the Arty Z7 are supported by the free WebPACK edition of the Vivado Design Suite.
